A Gentle Life of Kindness and Laughter: Marjorie Gail "Marge" Knutson Becker*
June 17th, 1929 - September 7th, 2025
“There’s ice cream in the freezer”
As Marjorie Gail “Marge” Knutson Becker liked to remind everyone, “There’s ice cream in the freezer.” That simple invitation captured her gentle compassion, honest warmth, and readiness to share whatever she had. Friends and family knew they were always welcome at her table and in her heart.
Born in Pipestone City, Minnesota on June 17th, 1929, Marge grew up curious about the wider world. Books soon became her first passports, and every story she read sparked a wish to see places beyond the prairie. In time she traveled widely, returning with soft smiles and spirited tales that made listeners feel like companions on the road.
Marge showed caring in quiet habits. Year after year she sent thoughtful birthday and holiday cards to her four children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, each note handwritten and full of encouragement. The anticipation of receiving her annual Christmas letter with the summary of her year was a true tradition.
Even leisure time carried her kindness. Around a board game or deck of cards she taught patience, fair play, and quick math—especially during lively rounds of “Blew It!” A sudden rule change delivered with her bright smile seldom upset anyone; laughter always won. Chocolate, a small glass of wine, and another story often followed.
Her creative hands turned yarn and burlap into cheerful wall hangings that found homes with loved ones. She treated every craft session like a gift and each finished piece seemed to carry an essence of herself.
Faith guided Marge’s path. As a founding member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church she welcomed newcomers, brewed coffee, and listened with open ears. Many recall leaving those chats lighter than they arrived.
She shared lifelong companionship with her late husband, George Nathan Becker, and continued to honor him through the warmth she gave their family. Her kindness lives on in their children—Greg, Doug, Gail, and Karen—and in the circle that includes Kim Becker, Mike Paresa, Philip Rapoza, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and sisters Roberta Davidson and Ann Knutson. Each carries a story, a piece of artwork, or a well-worn game board that bears her touch.
Marge passed away peacefully at home in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 7th, 2025. Those who loved her will keep sharing ice cream, reading another chapter, and speaking her gentle wisdom to new ears as we remember her.
