Uncle Larry was a special uncle. When Sarah and I were small, we went to Kailua often to visit the Yoshizumi family. Back then it was no small feat to make the drive along a winding narrow road. Since my Dad's four brothers all left for the mainland, Uncle Larry became like a brother. They went to see the Islanders play and other sporting events at Aloha Stadium. My dad was good at working around the house. But, when it came time to re-paint, he always got Uncle to work along side. Uncle Larry was quiet and soft-spoken. I don't recall him ever saying an unkind word. And, that, I think is why I liked him so much.
