Miguel Babatunde Richard Savage's Obituary
With deep sorrow, we share that our beloved Miguel (“Mike”) Babatunde Richard Savage died peacefully at his home in Kailua, Hawaii on March 29, 2026. We will always remember his positive, appreciative attitude toward life and his many stories.
Mike was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on November 3rd, 1935, and grew up primarily in Scotland. He studied natural sciences at Cambridge University and went on to a long career as a science educator in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania and other countries in Africa.
Mike believed that children should make their own observations and draw their own conclusions about the world rather than learning “facts” from a textbook. He thought that teaching and learning should be fun. He particularly loved children (even teenagers), and they all loved him.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Sidney Westley, his children, Yewande, Wendy, Nick and Jay Savage, his stepdaughters, Elizabeth, Karen and Marian Westley, and his seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Our family would like to thank the caregivers who helped us take care of Mike during his final weeks and the staff of the Kaiser Permanente Hospice Program whose help and support were invaluable.
All who knew and loved Mike are welcome to a memorial service at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 93 North Kainalu Drive, Kailua, on Saturday, May 9th, starting at 3:00 in the afternoon. Later, his ashes will be scattered in Killin, Scotland, where he had many happy childhood memories. To help with catering, please let Sidney know if you plan to attend the service in Kailua ([email protected]).
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan (https://buckeyeclinic.org/).
