Robert Bruce Lloyd Jr.'s Obituary
The Reverend Robert Bruce Lloyd, Jr.
Kailua, Hawaii – The Reverend Robert Bruce “Rob” Lloyd, Jr., 71, of Kailua, passed into eternal glory after a courageous seven-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. As a retired pastor in the United Methodist Church and a Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, Rob’s life was shaped not by rank or title but by a servant’s heart.
Whether serving his fellow soldiers as an Army officer, his congregants as a pastor, or his fellow believers through the “Walk to Emmaus” ministry, Rob poured himself out in service to others. His life was dedicated to reflecting the love of Jesus Christ.
Born December 14, 1953, in Oberlin, Ohio, to Robert Bruce Lloyd, Sr., a professor of Classics, and Angela Davies (Pardington) Lloyd, a Latin teacher and dean, Rob grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, graduating from E. C. Glass High School where he met his future wife, Mary Lisa Anderson. They were married on August 23, 1975, at Court Street United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, and together built a life of love and shared calling.
Rob earned his degree in French from the College of William and Mary in 1975 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army’s Transportation Corps that same year. He was selected for the prestigious Army Funded Legal Education Program and earned his law degree from the University of Richmond in 1981. He served with distinction in legal positions across South Korea, Germany, and the United States throughout his 28-year military career.
Rob’s heart was forever transformed during a Walk to Emmaus retreat. From that moment on, he felt a profound calling to ministry, dedicating his life to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone he encountered. After retiring from the Army, Rob earned a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in 2006. He was ordained as a Methodist pastor, serving congregations in Kentucky, Virginia, and Hawaii until stepping down from active ministry in 2020.
Rob and Lisa worshiped at Christ the Foundation Anglican Church, where Lisa is an ordained deacon. Rob found profound solace and spiritual nourishment in the Anglican Church's rich traditions and worship.
Rob’s ministry extended beyond the pulpit. He remained deeply involved in the Walk to Emmaus movement, offering guidance, love, and support through retreats and weekly reunion groups. Those dear friends continued ministering to him with great tenderness and care in his final years.
Rob’s faith gave him peace, even in the face of illness. He died with courage, confident in the love of his Savior and the promise of eternal life. His poem “The Walk” captures the heart of his journey: “For how could we good news decline to bring, to those who need to know that
this is true? The Prince of Peace, Redeemer, Savior, King, is risen, lives, and walks with me and you.”
Rob is survived by the love of his life, Lisa, his wife of nearly 50 years; their beloved children, Mary Angela Anderson Lloyd and Joseph Wesley (Kathleen “Katie”) Anderson Lloyd; and four cherished grandchildren: Kyle James, Elise Mary Kathleen, Sawyer Kathryn, and Miles Anderson. He is also survived by his siblings Marshall, Johnny, and Celia, along with Lisa’s siblings, Millard O. Anderson, Jr., Richard V. Anderson, and Julie A. Brennan. He was predeceased by his parents and his dearly loved in-laws, Millard Othello and Mary (Boettcher) Anderson.
A Christian funeral service will be held at Christ the Foundation Anglican Church, meeting at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 875 Auloa Road, Kailua, HI, on September 6th at 10 a.m. The ashes will be committed to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu on Thursday September 4, 2025 at 10:30 a.m.
