Robert M.S. Tom, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully in his home in Honolulu, Hawaii on Thursday, February 22, 2024. He was 97 years old.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Robert dedicated his life to service, education, and family. He was a true patriot, having served in the U.S. Army during the Occupation Period following World War II. His commitment to his country earned him the World War II Victory Medal.
After graduating from St. Louis High School, Robert began his career at Pearl Harbor, a pivotal moment in his life. He later answered the call of duty and was drafted into the Army in 1945, where he continued to serve with honor. His time in military service created a life changing opportunity for him to attend college. He obtained his B.A. from George Washington University and MBA from New York University. Upon graduation he became a Certified Public Accountant.
His financial expertise enabled him to eventually become the first Asian-American to hold the position of Vice President and Treasurer at Hawaiian Telephone (then known as GTE Hawaiian Tel), contributing significantly to the company’s success from the 1960s to 1987. Robert also volunteered his services for more than fifty years as the Investment Consultant for Hawaiian Financial FCU (formerly known as Hawaiian Tel FCU).
Outside of work, Robert enjoyed running and playing golf. He was a member of the Mid-Pacific Country Club for over fifty years. An avid golfer, he played the sport with enthusiasm. His love for the game brought him joy and camaraderie.
Robert is survived by, his beloved wife of 69 years, Mabel, two sons, Curtis (Joy) and Duane, who carry on his legacy. His two grandchildren (Elliot and Emily) will forever cherish the memories of their loving grandfather.
For over 60 years, Robert and Mabel resided in the same house in Honolulu, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments. Their bond was unbreakable, and their legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew them.
